Let me start by addressing a few misconceptions about yoga:
1. You have to be flexible
Incorrect. Yoga is often assumed to be a difficult practice. It is always encouraged to pace yourself and remember the focus of yoga is the synchronization of your breath with your movement. Yes, this will lead to increased flexibility in due time but there are plenty of accommodations that can be made to ensure a safe stretch. Items such as yoga blocks and straps are among the most popular.
2. It's just for Women
Men, Women, boys, and girls could all benefit from incorporating yoga into their daily lives. The relaxation is mental and physical. I suggest trying yoga before and after workouts; you will feel the difference. Children may benefit from safe yoga practice (monitored by a supervising adult) by calming their nerves and utilizing their energy.
3. You need to take a Yoga Class
Though I suggest trying a yoga class, schedules don't always align. This doesn't mean you should miss out on all of the benefits of yoga. There are several channels on YouTube to explore (videos linked below). If practicing at home, pay extra attention to your form since there isn't an instructor to make corrections.
The Benefits of practicing Yoga:
1. Relaxation
Yoga goes hand-in-hand with relaxation, recommended by doctors and therapists to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression. I have personally seen a huge difference in my mental health by adding yoga to my weekly routines. I find myself at peace after during yoga.
2. Improved Flexibility
After several sessions you will begin to notice a difference in your everyday flexibility. Not practicing will reduce flexibility. There is no cheating in yoga. Consistent practice is the key for progression.
3.Strengthening Muscles
Through practice yogis can achieve the more difficult poses. Yoga burns calories and builds muscle. Sequences can be altered to fit your needs and desires whether they be to target a certain area on your body or to overall tone.
