Best Baguette Recipe

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

This is the best baguette recipe I've found, tried and true. Don't be intimidated; you only need four (4) ingredients that you most likely already have (see below). No fancy equipment required (minus an oven, bowl, and spoon). NOTE: Dough will rise for 12-20 hours before it can be baked and served. Try it out and let me know what you think. Happy baking!

Ingredients

6 Cup all-purpose flour

3 Cup lukewarm water

2 TSP yeast

2 TSP salt

Instructions

Step 1: Get a medium-sized bowl (bread bowl preferred) and stir the dry ingredients until well combined. Pour in the lukewarm water and mix the ingredients until the dough comes together.

Step 2: Seal the dough in an oiled bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise on the counter for 12-20 hours. When I made this recipe, my dough was ready in 10 hours. Be sure to keep an eye out and use your own judgement. You will know the dough is ready once it's risen to the top of the bowl; it should feel sticky, wet, and will look bubbly.

Step 3: When the dough is ready, flour your hands and a cooking sheet. Preheat your oven to 450 F. Form a baguette shape with the dough and place it on the floured cooking sheet. If the dough is sticking, flour your hands again. Score the top of the bread and cover it with a towel. Let the dough rise 1-2 more hours.

Step 4: Place two cups of boiling water in a deep cooking sheet on the bottom shelf of your oven. Place the bread on the top rack. Remove the water from the oven after 10 minutes; continue baking the bread until golden brown (around 30 minutes). *I also like to spray my bread with water. This ensures an even crispness throughout. Once they're ready you can serve them or freeze them and bake them later.
